It's that time of year again. The Mississippi sun is out, the backyard is calling, and that rotting deck or crumbling storage shed you've been ignoring all winter is finally getting the axe. Whether you're DIYing the tear-down or hiring a crew, the one thing every demolition project needs on Day 1 is a roll-off dumpster waiting at the curb.
At Mid South Dumpster Rentals, we haul away deck and shed demolition debris all across Central Mississippi — Jackson, Brandon, Flowood, Clinton, Madison, Ridgeland, and everywhere in between. Here's everything you need to know to plan your project and pick the right dumpster size.
Why a Dumpster Is Essential for Deck & Shed Demo
Backyard demolition generates a surprising amount of bulk material fast. A standard 12x16 deck, for example, can produce 4–6 cubic yards of debris — far more than a pickup truck can haul in a single trip, and definitely more than your weekly curbside bin will accept.
Renting a roll-off dumpster solves the problem before it starts. Your crew tears down; debris goes directly into the bin. No pile in the yard, no multiple landfill runs, no cramming lumber into trash bags. When the job's done, we come pick it up and dispose of everything for you.
Choosing the Right Dumpster Size for Your Demo Project
Mid South offers 10, 15, and 20-yard roll-off dumpsters. Here's how to match the right size to your project:
| Project Type | Recommended Size | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|
| Small shed (8x8 or 8x10) | 10-Yard Dumpster | $349 |
| Standard deck (up to 300 sq ft) or medium shed | 15-Yard Dumpster | $399 |
| Large deck (300+ sq ft), two-level deck, or deck + shed combo | 20-Yard Dumpster | $449 |
| Deck + fence + shed — full backyard overhaul | 20-Yard Dumpster | $449 |
Not sure? Call us at 601-316-7891 and describe your project. We'll recommend the right size so you don't pay for unused capacity — or run out of room mid-demo.
What Can Go in the Dumpster?
Almost everything from a standard deck or shed demo is accepted:
- Treated and untreated lumber (2x4s, joists, decking boards, posts)
- Composite decking material (Trex, TimberTech, etc.)
- Plywood, OSB, and sheathing
- Metal hardware (screws, joist hangers, brackets)
- Concrete footings (broken up into chunks) — see weight note below
- Corrugated metal roofing panels from sheds
- Railing systems and balusters
- Lattice, skirting, and fascia boards
Items NOT Accepted
- Paint, stain cans, or wood preservative chemicals
- Propane tanks or gas canisters
- Asbestos-containing materials (older shed panels may contain this — test first)
- Tires

A Note on Concrete Footings & Weight Limits
Deck posts are almost always set in concrete footings. When you dig them out, those footings add serious weight fast. Concrete weighs roughly 4,000 lbs per cubic yard, which can push you over your dumpster's weight allowance if you're not careful.
Our 15-yard dumpster includes a 2-ton (4,000 lb) weight allowance, and our 20-yard includes 3 tons (6,000 lbs). If you're removing more than 2–3 concrete footings, let us know upfront and we'll advise accordingly. Overage is $55/ton on the 10 and 15-yard sizes. The 20-yard has a hard cap of 6,000 lbs.
Pro Tips for a Smooth Demo Day
1. Order the Dumpster Before Demo Day
This is the most common mistake homeowners make. Don't start tearing down the deck and then call for a dumpster. Order it first, schedule delivery for the morning of demo day, and start loading as you go. Mid South offers same-day delivery across Central MS when you call early.
2. Break Down Lumber Into Manageable Pieces
Whole deck boards lying flat in a dumpster leave a lot of air gaps, meaning you waste capacity quickly. Cut long boards in half (8–10 foot sections) and stack them flat. This can easily double the amount you fit in the same size dumpster.
3. Put Heavy Items in First
Load concrete footings, ledger boards, and heavy posts first, down at the bottom. Lighter wood and lattice go on top. This keeps the load balanced and prevents the dumpster from becoming a safety hazard.
4. Don't Fill Above the Top Rail
Federal and state transportation regulations require roll-off containers to be level at or below the top rail. We physically cannot transport an overloaded dumpster, and overfilling is the #1 reason for a delayed pickup. If you're running out of room, give us a call — we can swap in a larger container or schedule a second load.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size dumpster do I need for a deck demo in Jackson?
Most residential decks up to 400 sq ft are well-handled by a 15-yard dumpster. Larger decks, two-level structures, or projects that also include a shed or fence removal typically warrant a 20-yard.
Can I put pressure-treated lumber in the dumpster?
Yes. Pressure-treated lumber is accepted as standard construction and demolition debris. It is not classified as hazardous waste and goes right in the bin along with your other deck materials.
Do I need a permit to demo a deck or shed in Jackson, MS?
For most residential detached structures, you do not need a demolition permit in Mississippi. However, rules vary by city and county. Check with your local building department before starting — it only takes a quick call.
How soon can I get a dumpster delivered?
We offer same-day dumpster delivery across Central Mississippi when you call or book online early in the day. We schedule delivery 7 days a week.
